| The 1500V DC electrification of the 'Woodhead Route' was completed in 1954. The last of the scheduled passenger trains were withdrawn from the route (Manchester to Sheffield) in 1970 with the closure of the line between Hadfield & Penistone on 17 July 1981. The Class 76s locos were subsequently withdrawn. Reddish depot closed early 1983 and the 8 Class 506 units were dragged to Longsight depot for maintenance. The last day of service was 7th December 1983 and the line was then energised to 25Kv AC. |
